Fun With Hair Color

Client: Skye Romero
Before Color - Faded Medium Brown w/ Blonde and Red Highlights Coming Through
Desired Color - Medium/ Dark Chocolate Brown w/ Blonde Peek-A-Boo Bangs

This Process is performed a tad different than how it would be performed in a salon because the environment is different and certain supplies are not present. (ex: A Shampoo Bowl and A Stylist Chair) We did this at her own home. *Kitchen Beautician HOLLAAAA*

Supplies Needed:
Permanent Hair Color
10 Volume Developer
Hair Bleach
30 Volume Developer
Demi/ Semi Permanent Hair Color (Toner)
2 Mixing Bowls
2 Applicator Brushes
Highlighting Foil
Clips
Gloves

Supplies I Used:
One 'n' Only Argan Oil Permanent Hair Color (Sally's Beauty Supply $6)
One 'n' Only Argan Oil 10 Volume Developer (Sally's Beauty Supply $3)
Rusk Deep Shine White Bleach (Armstrong McCall)
Rusk Deep Shine 30 Volume Developer (Armstrong McCall)
Matrix Color Sync Demi Permanent Hair Color (Armstrong McCall)
Color Trak Mixing Bowl (Sally's Beauty Supply $3)
Steel Tip Applicator Brush (Armstrong McCall)
Salon Care Highlighting Foil (Sally's Beauty Supply)
Color Trak Hair Clips (Sally's Beauty Supply $7)
Color Trak Gloves (Sally's Beauty Supply)

Process Of Coloring:

*Mix the permanent hair color with the 10 volume developer*

Before we started, I foiled the section in her bangs that we were going to bleach for the peek-a-boo. I then sectioned her hair off into four sections.

We started the application at around 10:15. I started at the nape of her neck and worked upward. When coloring hair, you should always start in the back and finish with the front. This reason is because, in most cases, the top and front of your hair is usually the most damaged and so the color will take more and faster. You do not want this to happen!!

When applying the color, you want to take small sections all over the hair making sure you do not miss any spots. Who wants spotty hair? No one, haha. That is deff not cute!! Since color is a deposit only, it is alright to get on the scalp, but you do want to avoid this because color does stain the skin. Also, let's not forget about the small section I foiled in her bang area. Make sure you do not get ANY color on this section, not even the roots. This step is very crucial if you want to insure the desired look.

I finished the application around 10:50. When you are finished applying a color, make sure you work the hair and spread it so that the color gets oxygen. Oxygen is what activated the color.

We then sat around and talked for about 30 minutes while the color processed. DO NOT cap the head, this will block the oxygen to the color.

The color is now finished processing; so, it is time to rinse. We VERY CAREFULLY rinsed out the hair color. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT LET THE COLOR BLEED ONTO THE SECTION FOILED!!!! This step is SUPER IMPORTANT!!! Do not shampoo or condition the color because even though it is finished processing, it is still setting in. Also, rinse with COLD water!

Towel dry the hair, and pin the sections around the foiled section that is about to get bleached. You do not want these sections to come in contact with the section you are about to bleach. No one wants bleeding  colors!!!

*Mix your bleach in a separate mixing bowl with the 30 volume developer*

I, personally, free formed the bleach first. This means I held the hair that I wanted bleach and applied the bleach. Once I was finished free form bleaching the hair, I foiled it and put one last coat of bleach.

We activated the bleach with about 2 minutes of heat with a blow dryer and then waited about 20 minutes and wiped the first application of bleach out. If the color of the hair is your desired level, you do not have to re-apply another coat of bleach. We did because the hair must be in a pale yellow state for a toner to take.

*Mix Demi/ Semi permanent hair color (toner) with the 10 volume developer*

Wait about another 15-20 minutes and check the bleached hair again. Once it is to your desired level, rinse out.

Apply the toner to the section and let it sit for about 2-5 minutes. The reason the toner does not need to stay on long is because the color will take to the bleached hair faster than normal. Also, make sure you apply toner to at least damp hair. MAKE SURE YOU APPLY EVENLY!!

Rinse out, also in cold water, and make sure that you are careful because, again, you do not want color bleeding.

Once everything is all rinsed out, you can go back and shampoo and condition the head as you please. It is safer to shampoo, condition, and rinse the two different colors separately just in case there is any product left over. RINSE IN COLD WATER!!!

After everything is all shampooed, conditioned, and rinse, you can now add your heat protectors and style as desired!!

To style her hair, I used the following products:
Kenra Hot Spray (Armstrong McCall)
Kenra Root Lifter (Armstrong McCall)
Rusk Thickr (Armstrong McCall)
Rusk Being Sexy Hairspray (Armstrong McCall)
Paul Mitchell Mitch Construction Paste (Armstrong McCall)

Skye's Response and Review:
The finished product is ,well, absolutely beautiful. Never have I ever enjoyed change as much as I have with this new Hair color look.

Finished Look:

Front View (excuse the gaped bangs, haha)

Back View

Side View of the Peek-A-Boo

When is Cheaper Better?

Go Generic? - Hmmm...

I will be the first to tell you that I am a MAJOR cheap shopper. If it's a generic brand, I am usually purchasing it to try it out. But, I bet I am not the only one who has bought a generic brand of something and was unsatisfied with the product. How do you know when generic is the way to go? Here is my opinion on just a few products!!

By the way, I got extremely tired while typing this up, therefore; I will most likely add a part 2 later on!!

1. Nail Polish Remover
I DEFINITELY believe that you have to buy the more expensive brand and leave the generic on the shelf!! Yes, I'm sure the cheaper brand will remove your nail polish, but you will use WAY more than with the more expensive brand. It simply isn't worth it.

Go generic? -  NO!
( Generic) Equate 2 pack- $3

ONYX Professional-$5

2. Facial Moisturizer
I, personally, use the generic equate brand oil-free moisturizer. I also like it very much. To me, it does the exact same as a more high end product, which I have tried several. The face, even if you have oily skin, needs moisture to stay healthy, just like the rest of your body. As long as you are putting and oil-free moisturizer on your face daily, you should be good!!

Go generic? - YES!
Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer $10

( Generic) Equate Oil Free
Ultra Gentle Facial Moisturizer $6
3. Make-up Remover
You can research this if you want, but the ingredients found in all make-up remover are the exact same. This means, you are really only paying for the name brand in which you buy. There's not much more I can say about this one, haha. Just make sure you are purchasing an oil-free remover. Trapped oil is never good for your face!!

Go generic - MOST DEFINITELY YES!!
Neutrogena Make-up Remover $7

Equate Make-up Remover $4

4. Q- Tips (also Cotton Balls)
This is just silly to have to justify my opinion. If you know the difference, please let me know because the only difference to me would have to be the price!!

Go generic - YESS!!
Equate $2

Q-Tips $7
Is there a product that you question? Let me know by leaving and comment and I'll get right on it to check it out!! Also leave me comments with questions and requests for another blog..

And remember, you are who you are. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise and/or try to change you!

Beauty Pet Peeves

We all have them, but here's mine!!

For the record, before we get things started, I do not want anyone to get offended my the list below. You are who you are and do not let anyone tell you otherwise and/or try to change you!! (:

Blue Eyeshadow
Though many people wear blue eyeshadow, you will NEVER catch me rockin' it. I have never and I don't think will ever have a liking toward blue eyeshadow. It feels too.... middle school!

Bushy Eyebrows
Oh dear God!!! Bushy eyebrows are enough to make me want to slam myself into a brick wall full force!!! This has to be my biggest beauty pet peeve. I like the look of neat, trimmer brows. Ones eyebrows can make all the difference in the face. I'm not kidding either...

Just Bottom EyeLiner
I am so down with only top eyeliner, but when people put eyeliner only on the bottom tear duct, I just don't think it works. The look appears to be unfinished. Please, do me a favor and always put on top eyeliner.

Too Much Shine Lip Gloss
Personally, I rather just a simple lip stain along with a subtle lip balm/ chapstick. Too much shine causing the "wet look" is not attractive. It looks messy and sloppy. NO guy will want to kiss wet lips that will get all over her face. YUCKY. I prefer a more matte or satin lip color. Remember, less is more.

Non Matching Lip Liner
Come on ladies, if you do not live in East Hollywood, do not even attempt. You are not a "chica" no matter how much you try. You simple look like a clown or one of those hotline workers... It is not attractive in any way shape or form. Just please do not do this!! Your lip liner should become one with your lipstick/ lip gloss.

Uneven Winged Eye Liner
Uneven winged eye liner will cause your entire face to look disproportional. This is the one think when doing your makeup that you should take you time and have a lot of patience!! The winged look can either be used to benefit your entire look or ruin your entire look. Be careful when attempting this. Proportion is key (:

Kardashian Kollection OPI

So after searching and searching, I FINALLY found the Kardashian Kollection nail polish by OPI!!! I have been looking high and low from places like Wal-Mart, Armstrong McCall, Sephora, Sally's Beauty Supplies, Walgreens, CVS, etc!! Of all those places, I found the entire collection at the most random place ever, KMart!!!!! I was so suprised!!!!!

The color I decided to purchase was My Empire... My Rules. It is this super gorgeous taupe color. I LOVE it!! I love it so much, I think I may just have to paint my toes the same color! I definitely recommend this line. There are a lot of colors I plan to go back and get, but I just wanted to buy one to see if the quality and pigment was good enough for the $7 I paid for it. It is!!

My Must Have Products!!

Must Have Products You Should Have Too!!
Top 10 Products and what they do

Kenra Platinum Hot Spray

1. There is NO WAY I will fix my hair without using this hot spray. It is my ALL TIME favorite hot spray that I have been using for about two years now. I do not use anything else. It smells absolutely AMAZING and it helps your hair stay in whichever style you chose that includes a heat tool. You can find this at Armstrong McCall for about $8 and it is totally worth every penny!!

Kenra Root Lifting Spray

2. I just recently picked this root lifter up at Armstrong about 3 months ago.. It was I think about $11. I really do like it and recommend it to everyone. All kenra products smell so tasty!! I honestly do fine that when I put this root lifter in my hair, my hair all together styles better. I do not have to tease my hair nearly as much!!

Fahrenheit Straightener

3. My straightener is used on my hair everyday and this straightener that I found at TJ Maxx for like $35 dollars deff performs exactly how I need it to. There are several different colors, but I liked how this purple color reminded me of the original Barney... Embarrassing, I know!! It heats up to 450 degrees and doesn't pull and crack my hair at all!!

TRESemme Freshstart Dry Shampoo

4. This is and should be everyone's go-to lazy hair day product. You can find this at Wal-Mart or any drugstore for around $8. Everyone has those days you just don't feel like shampooing your hair. Yes, you can use baby powder and baking soda, but neither will give you the luscious volume this product gives you. No one will ever be able to tell that you haven't shampooed your hair. It also has a pleasant scent. I use this product faithfully because I'll tell you that this girl does not like the long process I have to go through to get this curly hair straight!!

CHAPSTICK!! (Lip Drench and Carmex)

5. I am a chapstick addict!! I have 100s of different chapsticks. My favorite has to be Carmex, but recently I picked up the Lip Drench at Armstrong McCall (for $3 might I add!!!!) The only reason I picked it up was because it was in one of my favorite scents of all time, coconut lime! YUMMY!! Yes, it works very well, but no chapstick is ever worth $3!! No one like dry lips, so please do yourself a favor and keep chapstick on you at all times!!! You can find chapstick ANYWHERESSS!!!

Eyebrow Razor

6. What is that!?!? OMG you shave your eyebrows!!?? Yes, I sure do! Eyebrows are a pet peeve of mine. I like my eye brows to be in tip-top shape!! I do wax and pluck my eyebrows faithfully, but I keep this handy dandy eyebrow razor in my purse for random unexpected touch-ups. Please!!! Keep your eye brows up. No one likes to look at huge Caterpillars on your forehead!! I usually get my eyebrow razors at Wal-Mart, but I'm sure you can find them anywhere. They are inexpensive. I got a pack of 4 for like $3.

OPI AVOJUICE lotion in Vanilla Snowflake

7. My FAVORITE scent of all time is vanilla. I like to smell delicious, you know, edible lol. The only thing, sometimes vanilla flavored products can smell over powering and cheap!! Yucky!! This lotion I found at Armstrong McCall on clearance for about $4. It is by far my FAVORITE hand lotion of all time!!!! You literally want to eat the entire bottle. It leaves your hands so soft and hydrated! I wouldn't recommend putting it all over your body, because the smell with over power your perfume because the vanilla scent is so pure and rich, but it is a fabulous hand lotion!

AVON- Mark Matte Chance Mattifying Lotion

8. There is not a day that goes by that I do not put this on my face. NOT KIDDING!! I got this from Avon for about $9, and it was one of the best purchases I have ever made. I do have rather oily skin. You put one pump of the lotion on your face and it like turns into a powder. All the oils on your face just disappear. I am in love with this lotion and will deff recommend it to anyone who has normal-oily skin.

Orgins Super Spot Remover

9. I started using this product about a year ago and this is still the same bottle I bought a year ago. You can find it at Origins in Dillards for about $13. The price may seem high for the size of the bottle, but I guarantee that this little bottle goes a really long way. Whenever you see a blemish on your face, dot this on top before you go to sleep and when you wake up, your blemish will vanish. Right when you put it on your face, you will be able to feel it working. This is my go-to spot remover!!

Loreal Go 360 Clean Exfoliating Scrub

10. Everyone should exfoliate at least 2 times a week. I have tried several different scrubs from drugstore brands to high-end brands, but I still find myself buying this one. I love the grapefruit scent it has. Grapefruit is amazing for refreshing the skin. Whenever I am finished washing my face, I can instantly feel the softness. You can find this at any drugstore or Wal-Mart for like $8.

The "J Palette"

The "J Palette"

A cheaper, slightly different alternative to the well-known "Z Palette"

Ever have just too many eye shadows thrown all over in your makeup bag only taking up entirely too much space? Yeah, I know how you feel! Well this blog post is going to help you reduce space in your make-up kit and put a huge smile on your face.. cheesy, sorry.

^^ Example Palette ^^
^^ The palettes that I emptied to make my 1 J Palette!! ^^

Supplies Needed For Palette:
Eye Shadow

Pure Acetone

Magnet (One that your parents won't freak out about if you ruin)

Hot glue gun

Any sharp object (I am not responsible for any lost body parts or  cuts)

Q-Tips
OLD EMPTY CD CASE (I forgot to take a picture on one... my apologies)

PS. I used magazine cut outs and tape to decorate my palette. This is an optional step.

Steps to create palette:
Before beginning, plug in your hot glue gun so that it will be hot and ready for you to use in a little while.
  1. First, you want to make sure you remove everything from the CD case: all the papers and even the plastic piece where the CD itself goes.... (It should pop right off)
  2. Next, You want to take your magnet and hot glue gun the back of it... leaving the magnetic side free from any glue.. then place the it on the inside left of the CD case. (Obviously, the magnetic side will be facing up.
  3. Now, you can start depotting your eye shadows. This is a very simple step, but it does require a small amount of patience. Take your "sharp object" and VERY CAREFULLY go under the metal part of the shadow and gently pop it out of it's plastic container
  4. Once you have depotted all of your eye shadows, it is now time to remove the extra glue. Dip a q-tip into the acetone and gently take all of the glue off the back of the eye shadow.
  5. After all the glue is removed, you can now place the eye shadow on the magnet inside of the CD case.
Voila!! Easy, Fast, and Simple!! I hope you enjoyed this fun DIY project. Let me know what you guys want to see next by commenting below or contacting me through Facebook.

diy tinted face primer

ex: Urban Decay - Primer Potion

SUPER EASY/AROUND THE HOUSE ITEMS/ QUICK

Supplies needed:

Aloe Vera (Ocean Potion: Walgreens)
Facial Moisturizer (Equate: Wal-Mart)
Liquid foundation (Healthy Make-up: Avon)
Empty container (Old foundation: Bare Minerals)
Mattifying Lotion (optional) (Mark Matte Chance: Avon)
Steps:

  1. Put a small amount of your preferred foundation in the empty container. This will put a slight tint to your primer. A Dime size should be enough.
  2. Next, apply another dime sized amount of aloe vera  to the container. Aloe vera is a very powerful moisturize. Because of this, you may apply it on a sunburn to prevent peeling. Aloe vera also provides a refreshing scent and all around feeling to the skin.
  3. After, add a good amount of moisturizer to the growing mixture: I added between 10-12 pumps. This is to keep the texture of the product along with  the moisture needed to brighten the pigment of your make-up
  4. I also add a pump or so of my Mark Matte Chance matte lotion because I tend to have a semi oily completion. This is an optional step and will not make a difference in the final product.
  5. Now that all the ingredients are in the container, all that's left is to mix together. The final product should be similar in texture to your ordinary liquid foundation.

^^ Final Product ^^

The PROOF is on the hand:
I applied to DIY primer to the bottom of my hand and then applied my MAC blush in Springsteen on both sides. It is obvious that the primer caused the pigment in the blush to be more vibrant on the bottom of my hand compared to the top line of blush.

I hope this was helpful!!! Thanks for reading!! You can comment below with requests, comments, etc. Tell me what you think and what you would like to see!! I want to hear whatever you have to say.
